Filoteca can play your own videos stored on your device, on your network or in the cloud. Only movies and series are read (not live channels), and Filoteca only reads the files: it does not copy or delete anything, and it uploads nothing to the internet.
Filoteca sorts your videos by file name and looks up their artwork and detail page on TMDB. The most reliable way is to name them like this:
- Movies:
Title (Year).mkv - Series:
Series S01E02.mkv(1x02also works)
If they are home videos, tick “Personal videos (no TMDB)” so it does not look up a detail page for them.
On this device: local folder
Choose a folder on the phone, TV or PC itself.
- Add source → On this device → Folder on this device.
- Press “Pick a folder” and select it.
- Give it a name (for example “My videos”) and press “Connect”.
If it tells you “Pick a folder first”, you missed step 2.
On my network
Media server (DLNA)
The video server of a NAS, a router or a PC (MiniDLNA, Synology, Windows…).
- Add source → On my network → Media server (DLNA).
- The app lists the servers found; choose one, or press “Search again”. You can also type its address under “Or type its address” (for example
192.168.1.20:8200). - Press “Connect”.
If it finds none, check that the device and the server are on the same network.
Network share (SMB)
A shared folder on a NAS, router or PC. Android/Fire TV and Windows only (not Linux or macOS).
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Provider name | For example “NAS movies”. |
| Server (name or address) | The name or IP, for example 192.168.1.20. |
| Shared folder | The name the NAS shares the folder under (\\server\Movies → “Movies”). |
| Subfolder (optional) | For example Cinema/Classics. |
| Username | Empty for guest access; with a domain, DOMAIN\user. |
| Password | The user's password. |
FTP and SFTP server
- FTP: fields Server, Port (optional) (21 by default), Folder (optional), Username (empty for anonymous access), Password and the “Encrypted connection (FTPS)” checkbox.
- SFTP (“over SSH: the secure way to read a server or a NAS”): the same fields without the checkbox; the default port is 22; the folder is a full path, for example
/srv/movies.
Web folder or WebDAV
For Nextcloud, Synology or a web server. The top-level folder acts as a category, and up to 5 levels, 300 folders and 5,000 videos per source are explored. Fill in Server (URL) (for example https://nas.mydomain.com/videos) and, only if the folder asks for it, a username and password. Protected folders that are only reachable from your local network cannot be played from the web demo; use them from the Android or Windows app.
Most common network errors
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Some details are missing: check the server and the shared folder.” | A field is missing or the port is not a number. |
| “The user or password is not correct.” | Check the credentials for that share. |
| “That shared folder does not exist on the server. Check the name.” | The shared folder name does not match. |
| “We found no videos there…” | Check the folder or the subfolder. |
| “The server cannot be reached. Check that it is on and on the same network.” | Network, IP or firewall. |
| “No DLNA server was found at that address…” | Check the IP, the port and that the server is on. |
| “Could not read the folder. Check the address…” | WebDAV: wrong URL or no access. |
In the cloud: Dropbox and OneDrive
Filoteca only accesses the files you authorise, and only to read them.
- Dropbox: press “Open Dropbox”, authorise and copy the code; paste it into “Dropbox code” and press “Connect with Dropbox”. You can limit it to one folder.
- OneDrive: press “Connect with Microsoft”; the app shows a code that you type on the Microsoft page, and it waits for you to approve it (it expires in a few minutes). If you leave “Folder (optional)” empty, it reads the whole account.
If you see “This cloud is not enabled yet in this version of the app”, your version does not include that cloud yet. If the code is not valid or expires, start again to get a new one.
